UN: Syria destruction 'catastrophic'

The United Nations General Assembly has been meeting to discuss the deepening crisis in Syria.

It comes as new figures reveal that more than 100,000 people fled the country in August, as fighting between anti-government rebels and forces loyal to President Assad intensified.

Lakhdar Brahimi, the new UN-Arab League envoy to Syria, said the death toll in Syria was "staggering", and destruction "reaching catastrophic proportions".
